Insurance cover for peace of mind!
We appreciate that hiring a car can sometimes be a confusing experience, especially when it comes to knowing what you are covered for. At Avis, we try harder to make everything about car rental as simple and transparent as possible. That means no jargon and no hidden extras. This guide will give you an easy-to-understand description of the options and benefits as well as answer a few commonly asked questions.
What insurance is included in your quoted price?
When renting a car, it is essential you are properly protected according to UK law and your own requirements. When you book an Avis rental car, the price you are quoted includes basic level of insurance needed should you be involved in an accident. In the UK, this means you are automatically covered for:
- Third Party Cover
- Vehicle Damage Cover
- Vehicle Theft Cover
Third Party Cover (TPC) Also known as Motor Liability Insurance Legal Liability Insurance
Covered:
- Covers you in case you cause damage, including passengers and their property, when using the Avis vehicle
Not Covered:
- Theft or attempted theft of the vehicle
- Theft of personal belongings from the vehicle
- Death or injury to the driver
- Damage to the rental vehicle
Vehicle Damage Cover Also known as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and LDW in Australia, NZ and USA

Covered:
- Cost of repairs of the Avis vehicle if it is damaged
- You will, however, have to pay an excess charge towards the cost of repairs. This applies regardless of fault
- If we can recover these costs from a responsible third party, we’ll reimburse you

Not Covered:
- Damage caused intentionally or by gross negligence
- Damage caused by failure to use correct fuel
- Damage caused as a result of a breach of the rental agreement
Vehicle Theft Cover Also known as Theft Protection (TP)
Covered:
- Covers you for the cost of replacing the Avis vehicle (or parts of it) if it gets stolen
- You will, however, have to pay an excess charge towards the replacement cost.
Not Covered:
- Negligence regarding loading of a vehicle (e.g. car unsupervised) or keys
safekeeping (e.g. left in the ignition)
Additional Insurance Cover for that added peace of mind
You may wish to purchase additional insurance cover. Additional Cover can only be booked when picking up your vehicle, where a Rental Sales Agents will be happy to explain the options available to suit your requirements. You then simply initial beside the required insurances on your Rental Agreement – and you’re covered!
Vehicle insurances can be bought separately or as a package. You don’t even have to pay until you return your rental car.

Premier Cover Package Premium cover is a package designed to provide addition cover on top of the insurances included in the quote.
Covers:
- Reduce your excess to £100
- FREE Additional Driver
- Super Personal Accident Insurance
- Provides our most comprehensive and care free cover

Does not cover:

Windscreen Protection
Windscreen protection can be bought additionally to the Premium Cover package, however if you do not require the Premium Package, Windscreen Protection can be bought on top of quoted price insurances.
Covered:
- Zero excess on front windscreen damage
Not Covered
- Other glass damage is not covered
Personal Accident Insurance
It’s worth checking to see if you’re already covered for this from your travel insurance. If you are not you can purchase this insurance on top of the insurances in the quoted price. Personal Accident Insurance is included in the Premium package.

Covered:
- Personal accident - a maximum of £42,000 per insured person in the event of
death, loss of limbs or eyes or permanent total disablement
- Medical expenses incurred due to an accident - a maximum of £2,100
per insured person
- Unlimited assistance and rescue costs
- Baggage up to £2,100 per vehicle - conditions and item limits apply

Not Covered:
- Certain personal items are not covered. Examples of exclusions include money, personal documents, passport, etc
Additional Insurance options
The additional insurances cover is an optional extra which will be charged on top of your quoted price.
Premium Cover Package
- Small Vehicle - £12.50 per day*
- Medium Vehicle - £15.50 per day*
- Large Vehicle £16.50 per day*
Windscreen Protections
- All vehicles are charged at £2.00 per day*
Personal Accident Insurance
- All vehicles are charged at £4.75 per day*
*capped at 10 out of every 28 day period

Additional Information
Taking your car abroad To take a vehicle abroad you must purchase an additional protection package, Continental Cover, which is available from Avis rental locations. We will provide the relevant vehicle paperwork and breakdown assistance cover to take vehicles abroad. However, please be sure to give at least 48 hours notice to arrange this cover.

We are unable to provide any mandatory vehicle equipment required for driving abroad (e.g. warning triangles, fluorescent jackets, etc.) which vary by country. It is the drivers responsibility to procure these and know the legal requirements (driving rules and motoring equipment) of the country they are visiting.
Who’s covered to drive?
Only those people named as drivers on the rental agreement are insured to drive the vehicle. Additional drivers can be nominated for a charge. An additional driver is included when taking Premier Cover.
