If I was a learner driver right now I think I would’ve balked at the end idea of having to endure an additional assessment on my driving test. But if I knew that this assessment could help me save 15% on my fuel costs then I might be a little more enthusiastic.

Well according to The ETA, that’s how much fuel newly qualified driver’s stand to save with the Driving Standards Agency introducing a new green assessment to the UK driving test. Thankfully for prospective drivers, the assessment will not deliver a fail for inefficient driving but it will help provide tips and advice to help new drivers adopt a more fuel-efficient driving technique.

I think that’s a really positive step by the Driving Standards Agency and my only disappointment is that I did not get to benefit from this assessment! If you’re interested in any tips for efficient driving then we do have some blog posts on:
- Saving money on fuel by driving well
- A new tip to reduce your fuel consumption

  1. Driving Instructor Says:

I’m not sure many learners who pass the driving test will be too concerned about whether their drive was eco friendly or not, they will be too happy that they passed!

  2. Surinder Says:

Very correct… passing driving test in U.K is not easy.instructors/ADI/DVLA/examiners and many others have made this an industry that earns money(revenue) for them by failing even those who deserve a pass I have seen examiners tricking and confusing people who take exams to make sure they fail….and with eco driving they have one more excuse to fail people!!

I have just passed my driving test can anyone give me advice on how long before i can hire a car and what types i can hire

  4. Rob White- Marketing, Avis UK Says:

Hi Denis, customers need to have held a licence for at least a year. At which point you can drive any car category (in the UK – although there is a minimum age of 23, with a young driver surcharge applying to customers under the age of 25).

  5. Angel Says:

I am recently obtained a UK driving license however I have been driving for years on my Indian license. In such case will I be able to hire a car?

  6. Chris Cox - Reservations, Avis UK Says:

    Hi Angel,

Do you still have your Indian licence? You will need to prove to the Avis office that you have held a licence for at least a year so your Indian one together with your new UK licence would suffice.
