The old city in Carcossonne is definitely one of the places I'd recommend to visit - but with Ryanair flights, it has attracted a lot of Brits.

So I'd suggest going further afield in the region as the wine is great and the views are amazing. You've a choice of coast as well as the mountains and gorges. Excellent for bird watching, walking, driving and cycling - the Tour de France is cutting across the region again this year.
