Hello Teymour, I have double checked with France and Visa Debit Card would not be accepted at time of pick up, a credit card would be required. Pre paid Visa cards and Mastercard Debit are not accepted anywhere for the time being.

I have just been scanning through this blogpost and its highly useful replies over the last several years. However, because of regulation changes, could you please clarify the following; can a Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit or Prepaid Visa card be used in Nice, France? Thank you.

When you pick up the car Avis generally hold the price of a full tank of fuel on your credit/debit card, this will be refunded when you return the car with a full tank of fuel. If you choose the pay on return rate, we hold the full value of the rental as well as the deposit.

However, the quantity can vary depending upon the pick-up location, the agreed rate, the type of car and any extras selected, for example some offices may hold the full amount of the excess as well as the fuel cost. If you need a definitive answer on the amount that will be held you must speak to the rental office directly.

I will be in Nice next week and I need to know how much will be held on my credit card as a dposit and is there any way of reducing it. I understand from a colleague that the policy of reducing the deposit by paying for extra insurance has changed

Dear Roy ,

In order to rent with Avis you would require to pay using a credit card or Visa Debit card not visa Electron. A cash deposit is only accepted in very few locations as this is not an agreed method of payment. What location are you looking to rent from?

Will I be able to rent a car from Avis – London Heathrow Airport using my Aussie DEBIT Mastercard? Is this ok?

OR do I need to have a credit-card/EU debit-card to make the booking.

Is it possible to rent a car with cash deposit? I don’t want the baggage that a credit card brings, so I am looking for other ways around having one to rent a car.

Dear Luke,

When renting with Avis Italy, upon pick up they will generally block 20% of the total rental price and a full tank of petrol which is EUR 70 approx.
