Bergen Bergen is situated in Hordaland municipality and was founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyre. The town was originally known as Gergen, meaning ''green meadow between the mountains''. It was a good description, since Bergen is surrounded by seven great mountains on Norway's west coast. The city is Norway;s second largest city with a quarter of a million inhabitants and is today a centre for research in marine and oil field.
