Toulouse, known as the Ville Rose (Pink City) for its typical pink brick architecture, is a city in the south-west of France. This ancient city has a medieval old town and is the gateway to the Pyrenees mountain range. Today, it's the high-tech base of the European aerospace industry and home to the second largest university campus in France, after Paris.
Plan your journey around ToulouseFrance's fourth largest city has a varied past. The old capital of southern France was the home of the comtes de Toulouse (counts of Toulouse) and its magnificent court was renowned especially for its troubadours.
Remnants from the past can be found when walking along the cobbled streets and passing examples of the city's eclectic architecture. The Basilica St-Sernin is an 11th century tower and the largest Romanesque church in France. Renowned for its angular brickwork and eight-tier octagonal design, the church has been a stop-off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.
A walk around the Place du Capitole, the city's pedestrian square, is a great starting point to take in the sights and sounds of the city. Work your way around various streets lined with vintage shops and small boutiques. Stroll up Rue du Périgord towards the 17th century Carmelite Chapel and gaze at the stunning frescoes and murals.
For a culture fix, make your way to the Musée des Augustins to see a collection of Gothic and Renaissance artworks. Modern works of art can be found at Les Abattoirs, across the Pont Neuf bridge in St-Cyprien, where the large stage curtain by Picasso serves as the gallery’s main centrepiece.
Visit the Cite de L'Espace on avenue Jean Gonord for a perspective of the city's contribution to France's aviation business. It's full of interactive exhibitions, including satellite communications, a planetarium and a replica model of the Mir space station.
