With its blend of warm Atlantic waters, tropical sun and refreshing northeast winds, Tenerife, the largest and best-known of the Canary Islands, has a reputation as the land of eternal spring. The climate is popular with visitors all year round.
Driving around the island is a great way to see the diverse landscape. The north is vibrant with vegetation while the south has a drier climate. The east of the island, exposed to strong trade winds, is arid semi-desert with excellent conditions for wind and kite surfing along the beach. The west is dominated by spectacular cliffs, including the 600-metre Los Gigantes.

White Mountain
The sandy beaches of the south of the island contrast with the dramatic lunar landscape of Mount Teide. The island is dominated by the volcano, which looks even more striking decorated with a wreath of snow in the winter. The island even takes its name from its most prominent feature: ‘Tenerife’ was coined by the Benehaorits, the natives of La Palma. In their language, ‘Tenerife’ means ‘White Mountain’.
The island’s geography owes a lot to its main feature. The lava that has flowed from the volcano over the years has helped form the paradise of the island. The diverse natural features include pine forests, deep ravines, banana plantations and towering cliffs.

Your Avis car hire allows you to see everything the island has to offer, especially the wilder regions. There are wonderful drives all around, including long, winding mountain roads which offer breathtaking scenery.
Cumbre Dorsal
The main pathway to the volcano is the ‘cumbre dorsal’, a rocky ridge of extinct volcanos that forms the backbone of the island. The road weaves up at a leisurely pace from Santa Cruz. Alternatively, you can take the shortcut from the vineyards of Güímar. Beyond the volcano, the road winds down to the dramatic cliffs of the southwest.
Las Cañadas Caldera
Surrounding the volcano is Las Cañadas caldera, an extensive national park full of volcanic features. The landscape has been compared to that of Mars, mostly due to the reddish colour of the rocky soil.
Places to go
Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is the capital city and proud of its Spanish character. It offers sophisticated shopping, important cultural venues and palm-lined oases. To the north, you will find the Playa de Las Teresitas. Generally held to be the island’s finest beach, its sands are imported from the Sahara.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Above Santa Cruz is San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The ancient capital of the Canary Islands, it has a cooler climate and a beautiful historic centre declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.
Puerto de la Cruz
Along the northern coast is the old port of Puerto de la Cruz. The city has a more laid-back atmosphere than some of the other resorts on the island and the Martiánez Pools and splendid botanical gardens offer havens of tranquillity. Loro Parque zoo with its spectacular dolphin and whale shows makes a good day out for the whole family.
La Orotava
A short drive inland using Avis car hire leads to the delightful La Orotava, home to opulent colonial architecture. The surrounding woods are dotted with lush plantations and are a great place for hiking enthusiasts.
Fiestas
Whenever you’re visiting, there’ll be a fiesta taking place somewhere on the island. There are hundreds throughout the year, with more than 60 each month between May and the end of September.
Some are huge, like the Carnival in February, second only to Rio de Janeiro. Other major festivals include the hooded processions of Semana Santa (Easter) and Corpus Christi with its amazing flower carpets in June.
The Day of the Cross in early May features music, dancing and crosses adorned with flowers. The Battle of Santa Cruz on 25th July is a re-enactment of Nelson's famous defeat. The most important fiestas on the Canaries begin on 15th August in honour of the patron saint.
There are several important music events during the year, including the Music Festival of the Canary Islands in January/February, one of Europe’s major classical events. The International Jazz Festival starts in mid-July.
