A quick guide to New York
New York, familiarly known as The Big Apple or the city that never sleeps is one of the most surprising and exciting in the world.
There are many places to visit. The Statue of Liberty and The Empire State Building are must-see signts in New York. Don't forget to talk a walk in the heart of Central Park or go shoppnig on Madison Avenue. The City of New York is composed of several boroughs and Manhattan Island. In addition, Manhattan Island is divided in to twenty districts. These neighbourhoods, such as Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho, Tribeca or Chelsea, offer different styles, moods and populations. New York is also a truly multicultural city that offers visitors extremely diverse cuisine.
Public transport in New York is excellent but if you want to leave the city to enjoy the surrounding areas, a rental car would be ideal. There are quite a few scenic drives within close proximity of the city; you defniitely won't be disappointed if you visit Mohonk Mountani house (around 150km from New York City) or Bear Mountain Park (160km from NYC).
What's on in New York - Annual Events
Winter - The main event of December is Times Square New Year's Eve. January features several significant antique events, including the Winter Antiques Show. Chinese New Year is celebrated in the streets and at Radio City Music Hall in February.
Spring - The city hosts separate parades celebrating St Patrick's Day in March and Easter in April. In May, don't miss a chance to taste something delicious at the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival.
Summer - Met in the Parks stage a series of operas with performances in all five boroughs. The events are free and run in June and July. July also sees Independence Day celebrations and some large dance events, such as Midsummer Night's Swing where the dance floor opens at 6pm and dance lessons are available. The New York City Tap Festival is held every July in Manhattan and celebrates the art of tap dancing. It encourages beginners and experienced dancers to get involved. August's highlight is the US Open Tennis Tournament.
Autumn - Celebrate Italian culture, food and music at the Feast of San Gennaro ni September. In October find a bargain at the Union Square Autumn Fair when more than 200 merchants from America and abroad can be found as well as restaurants and arts and crafts. And in November you can search out unique crafts, food and music at the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival.
