Plan your journey around PragueA riverside location, magnificent skyline and fairytale architecture are just some of the reasons to visit Prague. Add an historic castle, a number of cultural venues and some scenic road trips to the mix, and you have the secret recipe for an unforgettable European city break.
Prague Castle, settled across the River Vltava, is the city’s most iconic monument. Stroll along pre-Gothic remnants and atmospheric grounds to absorb the landmark in all its splendour. It’s the largest ancient castle in the world and the compound includes churches, gardens, museums and some royal residences. Also in the city’s Castle Quarter is St. Vitus Cathedral, the country’s most important church.
For music, art and food, the Old Town is the place to go for all three… plus much more. Also known as Stare Mesto, Prague’s Old Town quarter is famed for its restaurant and cafe culture, markets and diverse architectural styles. The open-air Havelská Market sells Czech handicrafts, perfect for souvenir shopping. A short stroll from the market is the Old Town Square, featuring a number of facades that represent Old World Prague: the Gothic Týn Church, memorial to Jan Hus, and the elaborate Astronomical Clock. Also worth a visit are Charles Bridge, lined with statues and buskers, and the evocative Jewish Quarter.
Head to the New Town, specifically the lively Wenceslas Square, for a sense of modern day Prague. Call in at the Museum of Communism to learn about the rise and fall of the regime. Towards the end, see the eclectic sights in Petřín Hill, including public art by local artists and a replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Head east of Prague for 72km and reach this former medieval silver mining town. During the Middle Ages the town was known as the silver treasury of Bohemia. Today, Kutná Hora is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to provide resident dignitaries with silver riches. Learn about the history of silver and the part it’s played in the town at the Czech Museum of Silver, housed in Hrádek, a 15th-century castle.
The main attraction in this small, historic town (only 40 minutes away via the E55 and Route 16) is the chateau. It marks the spot where Czechs set about trying to master viticulture (the study of grapes) during the reign of Charles IV during the 14th century. Settled where the Vltava and Elbe rivers meet, Melník is surrounded by vineyards with vines that originated in France’s Burgundy region.
