So much to see and do in Paris
Hemingway certainly knew what he was talking about when he said that Paris, once seen, stays with you for the rest of your life. It’s a city as well known for the grandeur of its monuments including, naturellement, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, as for the village feel of its various districts such as the Quartier Latin, Marais and the hip and trendy Belleville area.

Paris in Spring and Summer
This city looks fantastic in the spring, and what better time to relax and revive in its many parks and gardens. The best-known favourites are the Luxemburg and Tuileries gardens, the vast Bois de Boulogne to the west and the Bois de Vincennes to the east.

Lesser known but equally exquisite is the Parc Montsouris to the south, in a quieter location. This is set out in the English style, complete with pond and statues and also playgrounds, pony rides and a puppet theatre for younger visitors.

Retail Therapy
Retail therapy reaches new heights in this city, whether in the chic boutiques on the Left Bank and in the Marais or the awe-inspiring department stores on Boulevard Haussmann.

Window shopping is definitely lighter on the purse and a real treat in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré with its big designer names such as Hermès and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as the cool concept store Colette. As Balzac wrote, “whoever does not visit Paris regularly will never really be elegant”.

Paris Gallieries
You could spend a whole day in galleries such as the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay or the Grand Palais. Let’s not forget though the Musée Marmottan with its Monet collection, the Rodin museum with its permanent collection of sculpture, and the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson for photography by the master and other big names.

May brings the Nuit des Musées – a one-night-only event in which many of the capital’s museums welcome visitors free of charge.

Wining and Dining in Paris
As for wining and dining, with a dazzling array of cosy bistros and grand restaurants, hip bars and neighbourhood cafés, you’ll be totally spoilt for choice.

Going that extra mile with Avis car hire
If you fancy a change of scene, there’s plenty in the surrounding area to keep you occupied. Take to the road in your car rental and explore la belle France with Avis. Versailles, Fontainebleau, Giverny and Chartres are among the nearby possibilities.

Versailles lies about 12 miles to the southwest. The palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is truly magnificent and well worth a visit. As you make your way through the splendid Hall of Mirrors and King’s Grand Apartments you’ll find it hard to believe the palace was once a mere hunting lodge built by Louis XIIII. Round off your visit with a stroll through the beautiful gardens to really soak up the scenery.

The royal château at Fontainebleau is about 35 miles from the capital. With parts of the château dating back to the 12th century and changes being made right up until the 1800s, this is an architect’s dream. It also has a wonderful park.

Giverny, home to the painter Claude Monet for 43 years, lies around 50 miles to the north of the city. Monet’s house and gardens are now open to the public and give art enthusiasts an insight into the life of this celebrated national hero. Once you catch a glimpse of the floral displays and water features in the grounds, you’ll understand where the Master of Impressionism found his inspiration.

Chartres, 50 miles southwest of Paris, is famous for its soaring mediaeval cathedral. The stained-glass windows are perfectly preserved and complete this fantastic example of French Gothic architecture.
