A second honeymoon is an ideal way to bond with your partner while also experiencing the trip of a lifetime. And while there are countless countries around the world that promise a second honeymoon to remember, we recommend considering one of our absolute favourite destinations: Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is well-known for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity and friendly locals. But what’s more, the country is overflowing with adrenaline-pumping activities for all levels of adventurers, including everything from horseback riding to waterfall rappelling to jungle exploring. And with eco-chic yoga retreats, luxurious spas, all-inclusive resorts—and everything in between—you’ll have no shortage of romantic accommodation to luxuriate in.

So grab your partner and get ready for everything you need to know to start planning your ultimate second honeymoon in Costa Rica today.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most frequented tourist destinations, yet that doesn’t take away from the magic of this stunning spot. Expansive white sand beaches, swaying palms and idyllic cerulean water set the scene for a romantic escape, but that’s truly just the start. Manuel Antonio National Park also consists of verdant rainforest that is home to a range of wildlife species including monkeys, iguanas and sloths. The well-marked walking paths in the park make it easy to explore the dense jungle on foot; alternatively, try soaring through the canopy with your loved one on a zip line tour—a fun adventure for all ages.

When you’ve had enough of the sun and sand, it’s time to relax at the Arenas del Mar Beachfront and Rainforest Resort. Take your pick between fabulous ocean or jungle view rooms, and then spend the night reminiscing about the memories you made together from your private balcony hot tub. If you need help planning the rest of your second honeymoon, Arenas del Mar offers custom honeymoon packages. Highlights include candlelit dinners and couples massages on the beach.

Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coastline is utterly gorgeous yet widely unappreciated. Expect laid-back vibes, Afro-Caribbean inspired cuisine and countless beautiful beaches from which to while away the day. It’s the perfect place to sip a coconut and do little to nothing at all, except be together, of course. Alternatively, head to the Jaguar Rescue Center, a non-profit where you can learn about the amazing animal rescue work that the center is doing while getting the opportunity to hold monkeys, sloths and other exotic animals. Cahuita National Park also makes an excellent day trip. A hike through the park will take you along a natural walking trail with gently lapping waves on one side and thick rainforest on the other.

For accommodation, we recommend a stay at Geckoes Lodge. The private jungle house features the ultimate in seclusion while still boasting a convenient location from which to explore all of the area attractions. If you want to splurge on a unique spa experience, then head to Pure Jungle Spa for their signature Total Body Chocolate Decadence Treatment. The treatment uses local organic cacao beans that are roasted over an open fire and hand-ground into a course paste by a local indigenous family. You and your special someone will leave smelling—and feeling— divine.

Santa Teresa

If your idea of a perfect second honeymoon consists of surf and yoga, then look no farther than Santa Teresa. Lying on the western edge of the Nicoya Peninsula, this sleepy surf town isn’t easy to arrive at, but those who do make the trek are rarely disappointed. The waves break in layers, making this a great spot for both beginners and advanced surfers alike. Yoga classes and retreats are offered throughout town, so you can hop into your downward dog as often as you please. For a particularly unique experience, try a Lucero Surf And Yoga Retreat. Chic accommodation, private yoga classes and custom surf lessons are included. While you’re there, don’t miss a visit to the nearby Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve. The 5km hike is strenuous, but you’ll be rewarded with a pristine beach and plenty of animal sightings.

If you’re not up for a surf and yoga retreat, then try a visit to Latitude 10 Beachfront Resort. This jungle gem boasts only five bungalows, ensuring a romantic and exclusive experience. Guests rave about the on-site restaurant, so plan to arrive hungry.

Not everyone can say that they’ve stayed in a treehouse on their honeymoon. But visit the Hidden Canopy Treehouse Boutique Hotel in Monteverde, and you’ll soon be added to the exclusive list of those who can. Monteverde is a must-visit on any trip to Costa Rica due to its expansive cloud forest. No, you won’t be at the beach, but you’ll have plenty of other activities to keep you and your partner entertained. And from your luxurious accommodation perched among the treetops on the edge of the cloud forest, you won’t have to go far to experience it.

Bird lovers will enjoy trying to spot the famed Quetzal. Coffee aficionados can take a number of tours through local coffee fields to learn about the bean-to-bag process. And thrill seekers won’t want to pass up the opportunity to ride horses to the magnificent 330 ft. tall San Luis Waterfall. The cooler temperatures inland also make Monteverde an excellent place to snuggle up with your special someone.

The Osa Peninsula

The Osa Peninsula is raw and rugged—and that’s exactly why it is our favorite region in all of Costa Rica. If you truly want to escape from it all and just be together, then this is the place to do it. The Osa Peninsula has little development; there are few paved roads and even fewer luxury establishments. Instead, expect families of Scarlet Macaws that soar across the sky and the deep sounds of howler monkeys waking you each morning. Plan at least one day to experience Corcovado National Park. Home to some 2% of the world’s biodiversity, you’re nearly guaranteed to see a plant or animal you’ve never encountered before.

For accommodation, we recommend splitting your stay up to experience both sides of the peninsula. Start at Casa Corcovado, an eco-luxury lodge just outside the perimeter of the National Park. It’s only accessible via boat (keep your eyes peeled for dolphins) and the journey is part of the memorable adventure. Then head to Blue Osa Yoga Retreat and Spa. Here you can indulge in daily yoga classes from the ocean-view studio as well as a number of scrumptious spa treatments all featuring local and organic products. Then wind down in the evening with a glass of wine and star gazing on the beach. If you’re lucky, the water might even put on a bioluminescent show.

There’s no time like today to start planning your second honeymoon. And with all of the romantic and adventurous options that await in Costa Rica, you’re bound to find something in the country that caters to your style as a couple. Now all you have to do is take the time to rekindle your love and remind your special someone how much you appreciate them.
