What's the difference between long-term car rental and a short-term car lease?

A short-term car lease tends to last between 3 months and 1 year. Typically, the monthly leasing costs are much higher for shorter contracts, meaning that even the cheapest short-term car lease can be costly.

Many car leasing companies will want you to make an initial payment and at the end of the fixed term, there may be an option for you to buy the car.

When you choose long-term car rental with Avis, you benefit from much more flexibility without any long-term commitment. Our long-term car hire deals come with insurance, maintenance and road tax included for up to 90 days.

Monthly car rentals are billed at the end of each month.

Please note if the vehicle is returned early there will be no refund on the unused portion of your rental, in addition you may be liable for additional costs, due to the change of the rental length.

If you would like to discuss extending your monthly car rental to cover a new rental period, you will need to contact us to obtain a new rental agreement number.

When you would like to discuss your rental, you can send us an email or call us during working hours (+44 (0) 1344 417100; Monday-Friday 9 AM – 4 PM), please make sure to include your rental agreement number or the vehicle plate number of the car in your email or have this data available before the call. 

  • Only available for domestic United Kingdom mainland rentals.  Excluding the following stations: Barrow in Furness, Blackpool Airport, Carlisle, Chester, Lancaster, Warrington, BAe Samlesbury (leisure rentals) and BAe Warton (leisure rentals)
  • Available all days of the week (subject to store open hours)
  • Free additional driver applies to one additional driver included in the rental
  • This offer applies to selected car groups only.  Car Groups included in this offer are Groups A,B, C, D, G, E, I, F, M, K, N and P.
  • We reserve the right to change our prices at any time without further notice. However, if you have ordered but not yet paid for a rental, we guarantee the price for 12 months from when the order was placed
  • The minimum rental length is 31 days, and the maximum rental length is 90 days

  • This offer does not apply to special fleet such as Avis Vans or Avis Prestige
  • Rates include the mileage selected, Theft Cover, Damage Cover and Vehicle Licence Fee, Windscreen cover, Airport charges and taxes where applicable.
  • Different mileage options can be selected and applied to the duration of the rental. The additional charge per mile is indicated below:

  • Offer may not be used in conjunction with any other coupon, promotion, discount or offer including Avis Preferred money off vouchers, discount codes and free weekend vouchers. 
  • Car rental return restrictions may apply. 
  • For monthly renewals, the Renter will receive a call or text requesting current mileage of the car and should respond for the rebilling to be completed.  The Renter will receive a copy of the rental agreement by email which should be signed and returned for the next 31 days of the rental.  Failure of providing the accurate mileage can cause the rental to go overdue and fall within the overdue car rental policy. Failure to supply accurate mileage of the car at the time could cause additional charges to be incurred.  
  • The Renter is liable for all traffic fines and penalties for the rental period even if the contract has not been signed for rebilling. An administration fee may apply.    
  • A vehicle can be recalled for a vehicle exchange, the Renter will be notified and will receive a vehicle from the same car group. 
  • A DVLA and security check will be performed at the rental station on collection of the vehicle.
  • The Renter must meet Avis age, driver and credit requirements.
  • Minimum age may vary by location and car group, daily surcharge may apply for renters under 25 years' old.
  • Offer is non-commissionable.
  • Offer is not discountable.
  • Offer is subject to availability and subject to change without notice.
