Plan your journey from Gyeongju StationFrom Gyeongju Station your unforgettable road trip across South Korea begins. Start in Gyeongju, an intriguing city often referred to as a ‘museum without walls’. This is because it has more ruins, monuments, pagodas and rock carvings than anywhere else in the country.
The expansive walled Tumuli Park should top your to-do list. Inside there are 23 tombs of Shilla monarchs and their family members. With the appearance of small grassy hillocks, they are Korea’s answer to the pyramids - and equally as fascinating. While only one is open to the public, many of the artefacts from the Tumuli Park tombs are now on display at the Gyeongju National Museum, including jewellery, weaponry and ceremonial items. The museum provides English labelling and multilingual guides.
Nearby you’ll find Wolseong Park, home to the oldest astrological observatory in East Asia. Built between AD 632 and AD 646, its deceptively simple design masks an amazingly sophisticated piece of equipment.
Bunhwang-san, the oldest datable pagoda in Korea, is another top attraction. Built around the middle of the 7th century, during the reign of Queen Seondeok, it’s made from brick and features ornately carved Buddhist guardians and stone lions.
Be sure to visit Bulguksa while you’re here too, which lies just 16km southeast of Gyeongju. This glorious temple and its gardens are, unsurprisingly, on the UNESCO World Heritage list and should not be missed.
Explore South Korea in style from the comfort of your Avis rental car.

Featuring Buddhist artefacts from various eras, as well as clothing and Confucian manuscripts, it’s a fascinating place to spend a few hours. Bullo-Dong Tumuli Park is another must-see. Similar to the one in Gyeongju, it features a number of burial mounds and sits at the northern end of the city. There are also numerous temples, pagodas and shrines in and around the city, including Donghwasa temple. A sculpture of Buddha believed to date back to the 9th century stands here.
Drive for just over an hour from Gyeongju Station and you’ll reach Busan. This large port city is famous for its beaches, mountains and hot springs. It’s also a great place to sample fresh fish dishes in its numerous cafes and restaurants. Seokbulsa temple is well worth visiting. Created from rock, this unusual landmark is even more spectacular inside, with ornate Buddhist images carved into its stone walls. Beomeosa temple, with its impressive architecture and mountainous backdrop, is another must-see.
