Find your perfect hire car at Lanzarote Playa BlancaWhen you get to Playa Blanca, Avis staff will organise the perfect hire car for you. Driving around this vibrant city on the Canary island of Lanzarote, you’ll experience a road trip of a lifetime.
Plan your journey from Playa BlancaThe island of Lanzarote boasts laid-back village charm typical of the Canaries, and sweeping volcanic landscapes that look like they’re from another world. Lava fields, national parks and beautiful beaches are scattered around the island, and all are within easy reach with a hire car.
Once a small fishing village, the town of Playa Blanca is now a holiday hub that offers tourists a combination of relaxation and indulgence. There are a number of sandy beaches to choose from. The rec constructed harbour, Marina Rubicón, is a lovely place to go for a stroll in the afternoon before heading to the restaurants and bars on the promenade.
The highlights of this small island are easily reached by car. To discover its history, visit the Castillo de San Jose in the town of Arrecife. Built at the end of the 18th century, this castle is now home to an impressive collection of modern art. Older still is the town of Teguise; founded in the 15th century, it’s full of cobbled streets and colonial mansions.
Food is taken seriously on the Canary Islands. With fresh seafood caught every day, it’s of course a staple on menus. Monkfish, swordfish and tuna are widely available, and traditional local fish dishes include ‘pescado a la sal’ (fish baked in salt).
Just outside of Playa Blanca is the Timanfaya National Park, where you can see the unusual black volcanic landscapes that Lanzarote is famous for. Dine in the restaurant at the top of Islote de Hilario, an inactive volcano, and take in the views across the dramatic landscape.
Turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, seaside villages and plenty of art, history and culture - Lanzarote has it all. With an Avis hire car at the ready you’ll be able to enjoy the island from north to south.
Beyond Playa BlancaLanzarote takes just over an hour to drive from top to bottom. Everything is easily accessible via hire car, and the short distances between destinations make it an ideal place for touring on the roads.
Las Cuevas de los Verdes
Just an hour’s drive from Playa Blanca is Las Cuevas de los Verdes, also called ‘the Refuge’. This labyrinth of caves is interconnected by a series of tunnels, and is believed to be an old pirate hideout. Follow the paths that twist and turn to the underground lake. The water is so still that the reflection looks like a bottomless pit.
Quaint whitewashed houses and weekend markets make Haria a great spot to visit on your road trip. Only an hour from Playa Blanca, this town is famous for an unusual reason; in the 17th and 18th centuries it was tradition to celebrate the birth of a new baby by planting a palm tree. For this very reason, the town has been given the nickname, ‘village of a thousand palms’.
Just over 20 minutes along the LZ-2 from Playa Blanca, La Geria is considered Lanzarote’s primary wine growing region. Thousands of acres of individual vines pepper the landscape. The rugged volcanic soil that’s spread across the ground is perfect for trapping the moisture the vines need, making this some of the most sought-after wine in the Canary Islands.
At the wheel of your Avis rental car, you’ll be able to explore these destinations and more on your road trip around Lanzarote.
