With its romantic architecture and antiquated towns, Spain is never dull. Take a road trip beyond Madrid and discover it for yourself.
Just under an hour’s drive from Madrid via the AP-42, Toledo is a small, pretty town that’s been designated UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to its many significant monuments. Toledo Cathedral and the Alcázar of Toledo are two of its star attractions and should top your sightseeing itinerary. Housing a number of grand churches, Toleda has long been a religious centre. Be sure to see the Monasterio San Juan de los Reyes. You can spend most of your time in the Old Town and never tire of the museums, churches, synagogues and mosques.
Lovely Ávila is just a 75-minute drive along the A-6 and AP-6. This walled city is one of Spain’s best-fortified towns, dating back to the 11th century. It’s also a UNESCO-listed city. The most popular highlight here is the Basilica de San Vicente, showcasing exemplary gothic architecture. This is just one of many churches in the town. In fact, Ávila has more Romanesque and gothic churches than any other destination of the same size in Spain.
Drive to Segovia from Madrid on the A-6 and AP-6 in just over an hour. Overflowing with history, Segovia’s attractions include Roman aqueducts and gothic cathedrals. The Moorish Alcázar of Segovia, overlooking the city, is considered one of the finest medieval castles in Europe.
From Madrid’s Atocha Ave Train Station, the capital city and surrounding area is only a drive away. Collect your Avis rental and take to the road.
