A 90-minute drive from the centre of Hatay brings you to Dörtyol. This city has been the site of many major battles, including one between Alexander the Great and Darius in 333 BC. The Battle of Issus was also fought here, involving 600,000 men.
The top sight here is the Payas Fortress. Built around the 12th century, this ancient treasure was used at the time of the Crusades and is amazingly well preserved thanks to a number of restorations over the centuries. Examples of Ottoman architecture can also be appreciated in Dörtyol.
To enjoy the Mediterranean coast at its finest, with beaches and attractions aplenty, head for the Turkish resort of Iskenderun. All it takes is an hour’s drive from Hatay via the E91.
Besides its beautiful long stretch of sand lending to relaxing beach days, there are a number of cultural sights to visit here. The Iskenderun Museum of the Sea, which tells the story of Turkish naval history (including the Gallipoli battle during the First World War), is a must. Another possible stop for your itinerary are the ruins of Bagras Castle.
