From Trabzon Airport it’s just a 15-minute drive to the centre of Trabzon, the Black Sea region’s busiest port town. Combining modernity with Turkish tradition, there are numerous sights to enjoy here.Start with a visit to Aya Sofya Mosque and Museum, set on a sea-facing terrace just 4km west of the town centre. Built between 1238 and 1263, it’s definitely worth a look and features wall paintings and detailed mosaic floors.
Trabzon Museum is another must-see. Housed in the Italian-designed Kostaki Mansion, it combines art nouveau with neoclassical architecture and displays numerous Ottoman and ethnographic artefacts.
If you’re after a souvenir of your trip, explore the bazaar district of Trabzon, featuring the city’s oldest marketplace – now a bustling area filled with boutiques, workshops and cafes.
When you need a break from sightseeing, head to Boztepe Picnic Place, located on a hillside overlooking the city. As well as spots for al fresco dining, there are a number of tea rooms and restaurants, plus the views are really quite something.

This imposing building is one of the Black Sea region’s historic highlights and dates back to the 4th century AD. From the car park, it’s just a 300-metre walk to the ticket office. En route you’ll see remnants of a 19th-century aqueduct. The monastery’s main church features an array of colourful frescoes, while the entire attraction is set within Altindere National Park, offering numerous walking trails.
Uzungöl
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, drive for about 90 minutes from Trabzon Airport and enjoy the delights of Uzungöl. With a beautiful lake of the same name, and mountainous backdrop, it has a slightly Swiss look and feel. It’s a great base to enjoy hiking and mountain biking, or to simply sit back and enjoy a serene lakeside picnic.
