Just 35 minutes from the airport, São Paulo, Brazil’s most populous city, is a melting pot of history and culture. From grand monasteries and late-night theatre to street-side pizza and samba lessons, São Paulo, the cultural heart of Brazil, has something for everyone.
Explore the vast Ibirapuera Park. Not only does it offer a precious expanse of greenery in the city centre, but it also doubles as a cultural hub with a number of museums located on-site. Spend some time in the Modern Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art or the Planetarium. Those who wish to stay outdoors can enjoy a bicycle ride around the lagoons.
A performance by the Gregorian Choir at the São Bento Monastery is an experience not to be passed up. The acoustics of this impeccable building complement the structure’s lavish interior.
Mosteiro São Bento, one of the city’s oldest churches that dates back to the late 1500s, is well worth visiting to see its huge stained glass windows. The panoramic views from the Banespa skyscraper are not to be missed either. If there’s time, pay a visit to the Theatro Municipal to see an opera or ballet performance. A trip to the Mercado Municipal, an elaborately designed covered market is also recommended. It's the place to buy fresh fruit and produce.
São Paulo prides itself on its museums and galleries, none more than the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, which showcases works by Bellini, Picasso, Van Gogh and many other famous artists from around the world. Be sure to stop by and take a look.
