Frequently Asked Questions
What age do I need to be to hire a vehicle?
To hire a car in the UK, you need to be at least 23 years of age and have held a driving licence for at least one year. Outside of the UK, the minimum age can vary from country to country.
If you're under the age of 25, you'll need to pay an extra fee per day (called a Young Driver’s Surcharge). The amount depends on where you hire a car, because the law and insurance terms vary between countries. If the location charges a premium fee, it could cost more.
If you are under the age of 25, you can hire cars from Group A (Citroen C1 or similar), Group B (Ford Fiesta or similar), Group C (Peugeot 308 or similar), Group E (Vauxhall Astra or similar), and Group I (VW Golf or similar).
Can I hire a vehicle at 21 years of age?

What do I need to hire a vehicle?
You and any additional drivers must have held a driving licence for a year and need to bring the licence(s) when the rental vehicle is collected. Please bring the driving licence(s) and either an international driving licence or a notarised English translation, if:
- A driving licence was issued in Europe and you are renting in a country outside Europe
- Or a driving licence was issued in a non-European country, and you are renting outside that country
- Or a driving licence was issued in a non-roman alphabet like Arabic, Greek, Russian, Hebrew or Japanese.
You must also bring ID including:
- The payment card that was used to make your booking. For some vehicles, two payment cards in your name will be required. One of these must be the payment card used to make your booking.
- Photo ID featuring a recognisable photo taken in the last 10 years. We will accept your passport or driving licence if it contains a photo, a national identity card or any other form of government-issued identification.
- You may also need to bring proof of where you live. This could include a recent utility bill or bank statement. Your driving licence will not be accepted as proof of your address.
How much will it cost to hire a vehicle for a day/week/month?
The price will depend on the vehicle size and model, availability and location. You can get a quote online using our website or by calling our reservation centre.
What is car hire excess insurance?
Third party cover is automatically included in your rental. Should you damage another vehicle or passengers and their property, you won’t have to pay for repairs or injuries. However, if you have an accident or the car is stolen, you will still need to pay a fixed excess fee in relation to the damage on your rental car. The amount you pay depends on the vehicle you hire and which country you hire it in.
For complete peace of mind during your rental you can add either Vehicle Cover or Vehicle Cover Plus to your reservation, to substantially reduce or remove the excess completely.
Which car hire excess insurance should I choose?
Avis have 2 coverage packages to reduce your car hire excess. Our Vehicle Cover package will either reduce your damage or theft excess substantially, or completely, depending on which car you choose. Vehicle Cover Plus has the same excess reduction benefits, but also includes enhanced Roadside Assistance to help with mishaps like flat batteries and locked-in keys.
How do I hire a vehicle without a credit card?
You can use either a credit card or a debit card to hire a car with Avis. Just enter the details online whilst booking or provide them to our call centre agent.
Can I hire car seats?
A range of child seats are available to suit the child’s age, height and weight. All our child seats can be selected during the booking process either online or by calling our reservation centre. To ensure availability please book car seats at the same time as you book your vehicle.
