Plan your journey from Harare AirportFrom Harare Airport you’re around a 20-minute drive from the attractive city of Harare itself. Its centre is a good place to start a tour and points of interest include the African Unity Square, the Cathedral of St Mary and All Saints, and Harare Gardens. Whilst exploring the latter, head to the south-east corner of the gardens, where the National Gallery of Zimbabwe is situated. There are monthly exhibits of contemporary and African art here, including photographs, sculptures and paintings.
The National Botanic Gardens boasts must-see attraction status with over 900 trees, shrubs and flowers on display. It’s a pleasant place to spend an afternoon and has a restaurant and a teahouse.
See some of the country’s native animals with a trip to Wild Is Life sanctuary. It’s located close to Harare Airport and offers a hands-on experience where you can view animals at close quarters. Please note: advanced bookings are required and children under 12 are not permitted.
To learn more about Zimbabwean history, spend some time at the National Archives of Zimbabwe, which has a collection of early explorer accounts, artefacts and historic photos. Another landmark to add to the sight-seeing list is the striking National Heroes’ Acre and Museum, which overlooks the city.

Epworth Balancing Rocks
The settlement of Epworth is a 15-minute drive from Harare Airport (via Airport Road and Harare Drive), where some of Zimbabwe’s famous Balancing Rocks are located. These unusual formations are a natural occurrence and the boulders, which appear to be precariously stacked on top of each other, are often linked by rock stems.
Kuimba Shiri Bird Park
Just under an hour’s drive from Harare Airport (via the A5) is the Kuimba Shiri Bird Park, a popular attraction with nature lovers. Located on the banks of Lake Civero, the park has over 460 species of birds, including peregrine falcons and African fish eagles.
Travel for 20-minutes (via Airport Road) from Harare Airport to enjoy the landscapes of Mukivisi Woodlands. Just 7km from the city, and offering a spectacular 265 hectares of parkland, it provides a peaceful retreat from Harare. Zebras and giraffes roam free and you can scout the wildlife from viewing platforms.
