Exploring Martinique
The French had commandeered Martinique from its indigenous Arawaks, Caribs and Taíno tribes by 1686, and it has remained an overseas department of France ever since, with a definitive continental flavour infusing the island. At least 500,000 visitors journey here every year—often starting their sojourn in colourful capital Fort-de-France. For lovely views across the harbour, tour the imposing seaside fortress of Fort St-Louis, previously a colonial safeguard and now a working French naval base.
You can’t visit the Caribbean without partaking in its notorious tipple, and there’s no better place to sample some fine rum than at Habitation Clément. Half an hour’s drive from Fort-de-France, the gracious 18th-century manor, decked in antique wooden furnishings, is the former residence of Martinique’s largest rum manufacturer. Pick up a bottle of Rhum Clément for beach-side sundowners.
Ready to escape the city? Head for the peaceful botanic gardens of Jardin de Balata, 10km outside Fort-de-France, and traverse its suspended tree-swinging walkway. Alternatively, dramatic active volcano Mount Pelée lures hikers to the extreme north. Scale its extinct lava mounds and ramble through the lush rainforest that surrounds it. Owing to Pelée’s 1902 eruption, the rustic beaches across its northern flank—between Anse Ceron and Anse des Galets—gleam with grey and black basalt sands.
Road trips around Martinique
The south is sprinkled with soft white sands and lapped by gentle wavelets, making these shores ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. A coastal road trip from Pointe du Bout to Le Diamant will introduce you to the laid-back Caribbean lifestyle, with cliff-clinging cafés serving hearty creole cooking and lively village squares guarded by pretty spired churches.
Spot Diamond Rock, a 175m-high heap of basalt that juts out of the Caribbean Sea between Martinique and its neighbouring St Lucia, from the idyllic shores of Grande Anse du Diamant. The intriguing mound played a strategic role during the Napoleonic wars.
Take a further drive east to the dazzling sands of Grande Anse des Salines and delve into the characterful tree-lined streets of Sainte-Anne. For unbridled wilderness, the Savane des Pétrifications on the island’s southernmost tip offers excellent hiking routes.
