Plan your journey from Faroe Vagar AirportStep off the plane and into your hire car to tour the island of Vágar at your own pace.
Charming villages dot the island and stunning scenery greets you at every turn. Mother Nature didn’t hold back on beautiful landscapes here. It really is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Vágar is particularly famous for its majestic waterfalls. The most popular is Mulafossur Waterfall in Gasadalur, just under a 20-minute drive from the airport. Cascading from the clifftops, this wall of water is simply spectacular.
Beginner and seasoned hikers will be impressed with the number of walking trails (with varying levels of difficulty) in the area. Having a car lets you reach the most obscure hiking spots across the island, while enjoying endless scenic views along the way.
The small town of Sandavágur is just a 15-minute drive from the airport and having been named the most well kept village in the Faroe Islands multiple times, it’s well worth visiting. Its most recognisable feature is its red-roofed church, which was built in 1917 and has a memorial outside dedicated to those that perished off the coast after their ship sank during the Second World War. You can learn more about the island’s war history at the Faroe War Museum in Midvagur.
Once you’ve discovered the best sights around Vágar, it’s time to take a road trip further afield.
Beyond Faroe Vagar AirportExcellent road systems complete with bridges and tunnels make driving around the Faroe Islands the most convenient way to travel.
The largest and most populous of the Faroe Islands, Streymoy is just a 25-minute drive through an undersea tunnel from Vágar. Like all of the islands, Streymoy is extremely picturesque with mountains, lakes, waterfalls and quaint villages filling the landscape.
The largest city on the Faroe Islands, yet arguably the smallest capital in the world, Tórshavn is also situated here. Don’t miss wandering around the old district and visiting top sights such as the Nordic House – a cultural centre that’s regarded as one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in Scandinavia.
One of the prettiest villages in Streymoy has to be Saksun, with its idyllic lagoon and traditional buildings topped with grass-covered roofs. A farmhouse with this unique, green feature has been turned into Dúvugardur Museum, depicting Faroe life during the middle ages.
Just an hour’s drive from Vágar, Eysturoy is linked to the island of Streymoy via a bridge.
The second-largest Faroe island is home to the tallest mountain in the Faroe Islands: Slættara tindur. This mighty sight is 882 metres high and driving along the mountain roads reveals incredible views of all the other islands to the north and south.
Attractive villages overlooking fjords and Viking remnants – such as a farm in Fuglafjørður that’s been around since before the year 1000 – are among the sights to see here. Also be sure to visit Oyndarfjørður, where a striking 19th-century church stands. Eysturoy is also very popular with hikers.
All this and much more is yours to discover with a rental car from Faroe Vágar Airport. Sit back and enjoy your most memorable journey yet.
