Plan your journey from Salalah AirportJust a 10-minute drive from Salalah Airport is Oman’s most exotic city, which has the spectacular Dhofar Mountains on one side and the azure waters of the Arabian Sea on the other.
Thanks to Oman’s former east African territories, Salalah has a distinctly African vibe and has more similarities to Zanzibar than it does to the rest of Oman. With its banana plantations and coconut-fringed beaches, it’s easy to see the city’s tropical appeal.
Haffa, Salalah’s charming neighbourhood, is home to one of the best markets in all of Oman: Al Husn Souq. Perched on the beachfront, next to Sultan Qaboos’ Palace, Al Husn is a labyrinth of shops. It’s famous for being the place to stock up on bukhoor and attar perfumes as well as frankincense.
Remnants of the ancient port city of Dhofar are located at the Al Balid Archeological Site, Salalah’s most famous attraction. Surrounded by a defensive wall, this ancient settlement dates back to the Middle Ages. Parts of the settlement are lit up at night which creates an atmospheric sight from afar. The Museum of the Frankincense Land is also nearby, which tells the story of the city’s history and culture from as far back as 2,000 BC.
The city’s Al Haffa Beach is nothing short of paradise with its white sand and blue water. Nearby, the pristine and tranquil surroundings of Dahariz Beach offer a place to relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Marvelling at the wonders of Salalah is simple with your Avis hire car. Pick up the keys and unlock your journey.

To explore the rich mix of natural beauty, modern developments and ancient traditions, take a road trip outside of Salalah and discover the other delights of the Dhofar province.
Less than a 40-minute coastal drive west along Route 47, you’ll be greeted by the beaches at Al-Mughsayl. Along the way you’ll see craggy limestone rocks and rugged mountains, and will be greeted with golden sandy beaches and turquoise water. Travel a few kilometres further and you’ll arrive at Marneef Cave, which entertains visitors with its blowholes that shoot water up into the air.
A pretty fishing village, Taqah is brimming with charm. Its main attraction is the 19th century Taqah Castle, but the impressive fort and idyllic white-sand beaches are also huge draws. Located just a 30-minute drive east along the coastal Route 49 from Salalah, Taqah makes for a stunning day trip.
A frankincense port on the shores of Oman, Mirbat is one of the area’s most interesting towns. An hour’s drive from Salalah along Route 49, Mirbat offers impressive architecture, a charming old town and a proud fort, which overlooks the coastline.
