Key road rules in Morocco you need to know
When you are hiring a car abroad, it’s useful to be prepared for the different driving laws in the country you are travelling to as well as checking the documents you need to carry.
To help make your trip to as smooth as possible, we've put together some of the key road rules in Morocco.

Which side of the road do you drive on?
In Morocco, please drive on the RIGHT side of the road, overtake on the left and give way to traffic from the right at intersections.
Unique Country Driving Laws

Do not use your mobile phone without a hands-free kit to call or text while driving.

Traffic lights operate in the same way as in European countries. Don’t turn on a red light.

Give way to oncoming traffic from the right on roundabouts.

If pulled over by Police, have your International Drivers Permit (if applicable), car registration, and passport in an easy to access place at all times.
Speed Limits
Be aware that mobile police speed traps as well as fixed speed cameras are common in Morocco.
All speed signs will be in KM:
- Motorways: 120 km/h
- Secondary/regional roads: 100 km/h
- Built up/ urban areas: 60 km/h
Please be aware of changing speeds indicated by road signs.
Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws
It is compulsory for all inside the vehicle to be wearing a seatbelt.
Child seats must be used for children aged 12 and under. It is the child’s parent / guardian or vehicle renter’s responsibility to fit the child seat.
Compulsory Equipment in your Avis rental car
When driving you must carry a valid driver's licence, registration documents and insurance documents.
Equipment in the vehicle should include:
- A warning triangle
- A reflective jacket
- A first aid kit
- A fire extinguisher
If you are driving in the Atlas Mountains, please ask your Avis representative whether snow tyres are compulsory or needed for your hire car when you arrive.
