Plan your journey from Frankfurt Train Station
Your Avis pick-up point is located at the main train station in the city centre. From here, all of Frankfurt is easily accessible. As Germany’s fifth largest city, there’s plenty to experience here.
Start by exploring the old city, “Römerberg”, featuring 15th and 16th century buildings that were preserved or rebuilt after World War II. The gothic Frankfurt Cathedral is located in this neighbourhood and was where emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were crowned for over 200 years.
The more modern area of Hauptwache is home to the city’s main shopping district and public squares. The baroque period building that lent its name to the district, once a militia building, is now a cafe. Find a bit of culture in one of the many museums featuring art, architecture, film and Jewish history. The Städel Museum, exhibiting art from the Middle Ages through to the present, is a top pick. To fully appreciate the city’s modern edge, stroll its bridges at night to catch stunning views of the illuminated skyline.
Frankfurt’s cuisine is famed for its apple cider, almond biscuits, plus a special herb green sauce used as a local spread on eggs and potatoes. Its multicultural population means you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants and dishes around the city.

Beyond Frankfurt Train StationSettled in eastern Germany’s state of Hesse, Frankfurt is an ideal starting point to explore other pockets of the country.
About an hour south on the A5, Mannheim is a German industrial centre, and an easy day trip from Frankfurt. Explore the water tower, the city’s famous symbol, and the Versailles-like Mannheim Palace. While strolling the city, be sure to have at least one pretzel – a local specialty.
A 90-minute drive east along the A3 will lead you to this scenic city in the Franconia region. Visit the UNESCO baroque palace, called the Würzburg Residence – the city’s most outstanding piece of architecture. Kuchala, or little cakes, are a local sweet worth searching out while in town.
Just over an hour south on the A5 will also lead you to Heidelberg, complete with a quaint old town and an opulent Renaissance-era castle, only partially rebuilt since its destruction in the 17th and 18th centuries. The town itself, also famous for its prestigious university, offers scenic views and walks to the Heidelberg Castle, its many churches and adjacent tree-topped hills.
The autobahn is your path to some of Germany’s most beautiful sights, so pick up your Avis rental car from Frankfurt Train Station and start your drive.
