Making your way from Lulea Airport to the centre of the city is simple. Lying just 9km away from Lulea, the airport is well connected to the city by major roads. Once you arrive at your destination, there’s plenty to see in this unique part of Sweden.
For an insight into local history, make the Museum of Norrbotten the first stop on your itinerary. This museum features an enchanting collection of artefacts and displays that represent the traditional reindeer herding way of life.
With the convenience of a rental car, it’s also worth driving 10km north of the city to visit the Gammelstad Church Town. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated on an island in the delta of the Lule River, is a well-preserved example of a historic church village. Here you’ll find a 15th-century stone church that’s surrounded by more than 400 cottages.
For something a little more contemporary, head to the Teknikens Hus – a science centre that captivates children and adults. Located within the university campus of the city, this museum has playful exhibitions that invite visitors to learn about rocket launches and the science of hot air balloons.
From the comfort of your Avis hire car, Norrbotten is yours to discover in style.

Lulea is well known as the gateway to Swedish and Finnish Lapland. With a car hired from Lulea Airport, it’s possible to discover this exciting terrain at your own pace.
From Lulea Airport, the town of Pitea can be reached in around 40 minutes via the E4. This is the perfect location to get a real taste of small-town life in Lapland. The Gulf of Bothnia’s sea and icy landscape also offers opportunities to take part in a range of outdoor activities, such as ice skating, dog sledding and snow mobile safaris. Also be sure to check out some local culture in Öjebyn, just 6km north of Pitea. Here you’ll find an early 15th-century church and clock tower. There’s also a museum about the village located in what is thought to be the oldest building in the Norrbotten region.
Drive east of Lulea for an hour and a half (via the E4) and you’ll arrive in the Finnish city of Tornio. On the waters of the Torne river you can relax on inflatable rafts or wooden boats in the summer months. In the winter you can enjoy husky rides and reindeer sledding on the ice. If you want to relax with a day of fishing, head to the Matkakoski Fiskecamp where you can spend the day casting a line in from a boat, and even grill your catch at the camp’s barbecue area.
The very best of Lapland is yours to discover with an Avis hire car.
