Plan your journey from Almeria Airport
Situated in the beautiful Spanish region of Andalusia, Almeria is a city steeped in culture and brimming with entertainment. Medieval squares are situated to the west, and modern boutiques and art galleries enliven the east of the city. There’s no shortage of restaurants here either, whether you want the finest traditional Spanish tapas or more familiar tastes of home.
The regal citadel, La Alcazaba, was built in the 11th century and lies in the centre of Almeria atop a hill, offering incredible views of the city’s port. Inside the walls of this fortress are a number of gardens and fountains to enjoy at leisure.
For more history explore the Museum of Almeria, which is the largest in the region, and be sure to admire the award-winning building it’s housed in too. The city’s 16th century cathedral is also a must-see attraction and showcases the Gothic architecture that was prevalent at the time of its creation.
Take some time to enjoy the Paseo Maritimo, the promenade stretching along the city’s beachfront. A myriad of shops, bars, and restaurants are located here. Stop by for a serving of traditional paella and gaze out at the fantastic views of the sea.
Spend an afternoon in Parque Nicolás Salmerón while visiting Almeria. Named after a local philosopher and politician, the park is now home to a wealth of unusual flora and fauna, as well as metalwork sculptures that capture the imagination.
Drive around Almeria in an Avis hire car and experience a real sense of freedom on your trip.

Beyond AlmeriaIf you’d like to explore the Almeria region, you’ll find a host of wonders nearby.
Travel 40 minutes to Sorbas to view a network of unusual crystal caves that stretch across 50km of underground tunnels. From the surface, a number of sinkholes are visible creating perfect points of entry. Take a tour through the labyrinth and observe crystal deposits, stalagmites, stalactites and other mysterious underground formations.
An hour-and-a-half drive from Almeria will get you to the Sierra Nevada. Meaning ‘Snowy Range’ in English, the Sierra Nevada is a group of mountains that boast the highest point of continental Spain. This popular tourist attraction offers skiing during the winter months, but as it’s located near the Mediterranean Sea, the area is known for its milder temperatures. The Sierra Nevada National Park is also situated here and gives visitors the chance to get to explore the area’s wildlife, including Golden Eagles, Spanish ibex and wild boar.
Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar
This natural park, only a 20-minute drive from Almeria, offers visitors the chance to observe some of the most unusual geological features in all of Europe. The towering volcanic rock formations of El Fraile descend to meet the Mediterranean Sea where magnificent white-sand beaches and plenty of secret coves can be found.
Wherever you decide to drive in Almeria, or the broader of the Andalusian region, you’re sure to have experiences that you’ll never forget. Enjoy the journey from the comfort of your Avis rental car.
