You’ll find our Avis counter at Perugia Airport located in the arrivals hall of the terminal building. Turn left as you leave the baggage reclaim and you will see a sign for Avis, Budget and Maggiore. Perugia Airport (PEG) is a relatively small airport dating back to the 1930s with origins as a military airfield.  

Today it has the capacity to welcome 500,000 passengers a year and is growing in popularity along with travel to Umbria. New routes have been announced to the current 17 on offer with 7 airlines.  

The airport is located east of the city centre with good road access via the E45 and SS75 highways.

There is currently no maximum age for hiring a rental car, so long as you have had a full, valid, licence for at least 1 year. Some additional steps may be required for those who are over the age of 75 on the date of the scheduled return. What is parking like in Perugia?

Parking in Perugia is relatively easy to find with a range of options including central car parks and on-street parking, which is chargeable. An escalator connects the main car park at Viale Pellini to the hilltop city centre.

If you are planning on driving into Perugia be aware that there are congestion zones in each city and parking can be hard to find in the centre. You can check the latest parking available from the city council. 

From the Avis car park at Perugia Airport to the centre of Perugia is a drive of 11.8km which will take around 20min depending on the time of day. Head west from the airport and take the E45 to Ponte S. Giovanni following signs to the centre of the city.

Perugia’s historical significance is key to the city’s charm. In the middle of Piazza IV Novembre is the Fontana Maggiore. Built between 1275 and 1278, the fountain is a symbol of the city from the medieval age. There’s also the San Lorenzo cathedral, devoted to one of the city’s patron saints. The Etruscan well, which was built in 300 years B.C.E, is one of Perugia’s oldest remnants.

Assisi

Assisi is Perugia’s sister city. Just 19km on SS75 from Perugia, this town is the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order of monks. Most people come here to view the jaw-dropping 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, which stands guard on the hill of Asio, overlooking the region.

Lake Trasimeno

For a scenic escape, Lake Trasimeno is just a 40-minute drive from Perugia on Raccordo Autostradale 6 Bettolle-Perugia. This is the fourth largest lake in the country and can be easily circumnavigated on four wheels. Stop at a traditional roadside restaurant along the way to grab lunch and soak up the scenic views.

Gubbio

The roads to Gubbio provide a great driving experience. Less than an hour by car, the SR298 twists and turns, revealing views of the magnificent rolling countryside. When you reach Gubbio visit the Piazza Grande, where locals and tourists like to relax and have fun. Take the ‘cabinovia’, cable car, to the top of the hill for the best bird’s eye view of the town.
