Plan your journey from Sheffield Train StationSheffield city centre is a cool 12-minute drive from Sheffield Train Station, via Surrey Street. You’ll notice immediately that Sheffield has a large amount of greenery. Since its industrial days, the city has taken huge strides to promote green space. Trees outnumber people by three to one. In a city of more than 500,000, that’s an impressive statistic.
You’ll also find many galleries, sport facilities and fine dining options. As part of the city’s “cultural revolution”, the vast Millennium Gallery – comprising four separate galleries – opened in 2001. The Metalwork Gallery is another particularly interesting attraction, chaptering the city’s transition from a thriving steel industry centre to a contemporary craft and design hub.
Head to the Winter Garden in the middle of the city, where a glass and timber temperate conservatory houses many species of trees, ferns and other plants. Walk the Norfolk Heritage Trail to discover historical homes belonging to the Dukes of Norfolk. If time allows, catch a live show in Tudor Square, where you’ll find yourself surrounded by many prestigious theatres. The Lyceum theatre is from the Victorian era, while the Crucible Theatre hosts the World Snooker Championships.
Beyond SheffieldSheffield’s countryside has much to offer the intrepid traveller. You’ll find it all within easy reach from Sheffield in your hire car.
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
Just a 20-minute drive down Abbeydale Road South from Sheffield city centre, arriving in Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is like stepping back in time.
Here you’ll find remnants from the area’s steel production days, including water-powered grinding wheels and trip hammers.
Peak District National Park
Conveniently, the Peak District is just a 20-minute drive from Sheffield along the A625. Thanks to its national park status, the Peak District is a beloved getaway for Sheffield locals and visitors. Here you’ll discover wide-open moors, tiny villages, endless farmland, ancient churches and bustling market towns. Take your time, as you dive into the many hamlets en route.
Bakewell is a pretty village in the Peak District that never disappoints. Home to the famous Bakewell pudding, you can’t pass through here without trying it. History lovers must check out Chatsworth House and All Saints Church. Haddon Hall is another must-see. This fortified medieval manor house from the 12th century sits in the centre of an Elizabethan garden, with views over the River Wye. Newly restored, the hall is now occupied by Lord Edward Manners and his family, but visitors are welcome to tour the site.
In the comfort of your Avis hire car, travelling around this picturesque part of the UK is a pleasure.
